Parral De Ohanes

A vine arbor over a terrace of a typical cottage in Ohanes with two cats beneath. I like to paint old, rustic corners and the light and shadows in this watercolour are particularly effective. The cats were there, as well, to add to the story. Ohanes is a village near where I live in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Spain

Still Life With Gourds

I found these dried gourds by the river below my house. I thought they made a good arrangement, placed on a rough shelf in my greenhouse, with some small, ceramic flower pots. I wanted a splash of colour in the painting so I picked some tomatoes to place in the composition.

Casa Señorial de Terque

The casas señoriales in the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense were built over 100 years ago when the area benefited from its mineral wealth and agriculture (grapes and oranges). Many of these grand houses are still lived in and there are some particularly fine examples in my neighbouring village, Terque. I love their elegant facades and impressive, wooden doors. I painted this entrance because I also loved the little chair with the red cushion which I thought completed the composition.
Las casas señoriales de los pueblos de La Alpujarra Almeriense fueron construidas hace más de 100 años cuando la zona se benefició de su riqueza mineral y agricultura (uvas y naranjas). Muchas de estas hermosas casas todavía se viven y hay algunos ejemplos particularmente buenos en mi pueblo vecino, Terque. Me encantan sus fachadas elegantes e impresionantes puertas de madera. Pinté esta entrada porque también me encantó la pequeña silla con el cojín rojo que pensé que completaba la composición.

Gatos de Terque

Cats of Terque. During the lockdown you are likely to encounter more cats than people in the streets of the villages of La Alpujarra Almeriense. I saw these two in my neighbouring village, Terque, and thought they would make a good subject for a watercolour.
Durante el confinamiento es probable que encuentres más gatos que personas en las calles de los pueblos de La Alpujarra Almeriense. Vi a estos dos en mi pueblo vecino, Terque, y pensé que serían un buen tema para una acuarela.

Still life of produce from my finca. I made this composition for this watercolour after collecting leeks, onions and a cauliflower from my vegetable garden. The colours, textures, light and shade inspired this painting.

Beneath the fig tree

Another lockdown watercolour. My hens under a fig tree in my finca. I was inspired by the strong contrast of sunlight and shadows. The old, wooden ladder, wheelbarrow and fork complete the story.
Otra acuarela de confinamiento. Mis gallinas bajo un árbol en mi finca en Alhabia, la Alpujarra Almeriense. Esta vez una higuera. Me inspiré en el fuerte contraste de la luz y las sombras. La vieja escalera de madera, la carretilla y la horquilla completan la historia.

Silla Azul a la Sombra

Blue chair in the shade. To set up another composition for a lockdown watercolour at my home I placed this old chair under the nectarine tree in my finca. I liked the contrast of the light and shade. The hens, always appreciative of human company, came to see what I was doing and posed obligingly.

Rincon De Mi Finca Con Gato

Corner of my garden with cat

A corner of my garden with my cat, Suki. As I cannot leave my home to find subjects to paint I have to find my inspiration in my garden and land in La Alpujarra Almeriense, Almeria, Spain. This is not a problem as I love the colours and the flowers of spring and it is so pleasant to be able to work outside to the accompaniment of nightingales. Here is my second lockdown watercolour.

Gallinas En Mi Finca

Hens in my orange grove

Hens in my orange grove. Because Spain is in lockdown now I have to find the inspiration and subjects for my paintings in the land and garden of my cortijo in La Alpujarra Almeriense. My chickens spend their day freely pecking around under my orange and olive trees. I included the old wheelbarrow and spade to complete the story in this watercolour and add a contrast to the colours and textures of the chickens and orange tree.

Rincon de Flores

Corner of flowers. Ohanes. Every time I visit Ohanes I see something new to paint in this pretty village in La Alpujarra Almeriense. I particularly liked the colours, light and shadows in this typical, narrow street of flowers.
