Village Street with Cats, Hortichuelas

Hortichuelas

Village street with cats

Hortichuelas is a little village just 2km inland from where I live in Las Negras on the coast. Earlier this week I walked around the village looking for rural scenes with wild flowers to paint but I found this composition in the “main street” with the flower pots and village cats and, although I do not think it is a very commercial subject, I wanted to paint it. This watercolour does not have a lot of detail and did not take me too long but I am happy with the result. If you would like to obtain it please just make me an offer to consider.

The medium is watercolour

The image size is 350mm x 250mm.
The original painting is for sale – Make me an offer!.
PRINTS. Superb quality, limited edition (1-100) signed prints on Canson Infinity Arches Aquarelle paper, 310gm, are available for same size 35 euros and A4 20 euros. They can be purchased direct from me.

La Ermita Del Fraile

Fraile

La Ermita del Fraile

I visited Cortijo del Fraile last week and was pleased to find that some restoration work to preserve the old Ermita has been done by the owners and the bell tower is no longer about to collapse. There has been a battle going on for some years between the Junta de Andalucia and the Ayuntamiento de Nijar against the large agricultural corporation which owns the property, about whom should pay for the restoration of this historic building. It was built in the 18th Century for the Dominican friars of Almeria but is better known as the location of the real-life double murder in 1928 known as the crime of Nijar which inspired the poet Federico Garcia Lorca to write his famous drama, ‘Blood Wedding’.
La Ermita del Fraile is located in the heart of the Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata not far from where I live In las Negras so I have walked around here many times but I have not been inspired to paint this old building before. On this occasion though the light and colours were superb, the horses tethered outside added life to the scene and the ermita itself looked particularly attractive and interesting to draw. I selected this view to paint from as I wanted to include the eucalyptus trees and part of the ploughed field in the foreground to provide different shapes and textures. Which I think makes a more interesting composition than only including the church in the painting.

La Isleta Del Moro

step-12

La Isleta del Moro

The British couple, who  commissioned my recent pastel of Las Negras for their villa in Desert Springs, asked for another Almerian coastal scene to hang with it in the same room so I painted this view of La Isleta del Moro for them. Fortunately the light last week was similar to that when I painted their pastel of Las Negras a few weeks ago so the paintings make a good pair.

Paint and Draw magazine asked me to write another workshop article for them so I have done this describing how I created this painting illustrating it with photos of the various stages. I think this will be published in next month’s issue.

The image size of the painting is 50cm x 32cm and I used Sennelier artist’s soft pastels on Sennelier pastel card.

Daisy and her puppies

We took many photos of Daisy and her puppies the day they were born but it would be almost impossible to capture a photo of her with all four puppies neatly composed so I painted them. This work is for us so the original painting is not for sale but prints and products of the image are available.

Medium: acrylic on canvas

Image size: 40cm x 30cm

Prints available from ourselves and also, plus other products, from Fine Art America and Red Bubble –

Fishing Boat at Las Negras

las-negras

Fishing boat at Las Negras

This is a view I see nearly every morning when I walk down to the village. A couple of weeks ago this attractive fishing boat, not from Las Negras, was moored for a few days in the perfect spot to make it a focal point of the composition. The fishermen working on the boat, the reflections in the water and the seagulls flying around add life to the scene. I could not miss the opportunity to paint it in watercolours. The little boats from the village are usually pulled up on to the beach and this is the first time I have seen a boat moored here so conveniently.

The Alhambra from Sacromonte, Granada

alhambra

The Alhambra from Sacromonte, Granada

I like this view of the Alhambra from Sacromonte in Granada. Although the peaks of the Sierra Nevada do not provide a snowy backdrop to the castle and palace, the different trees provide a colourful foreground, particularly in autumn when this was painted. A lovely subject for watercolour.

Cuesta Chapiz, Granada

cuesta-chapiz

Cuesta Chapiz

This is the final painting from my last visit to Granada at the end of November. This street, Cuesta Chapiz, runs down to the Rio Darro from the top of the old city. It divides the historic quarters, the Albaicin on the right from Sacromonte on the left and looks across to the Alhambra on the opposite hill. It is a wonderful subject to paint in watercolour, particularly with the beautiful soft light and colours of late autumn. The attractive old buildings are also a pleasure to draw.
