On the edge of my village, Las Negras, in The Parque Natural de Cabo de Gata, Almeria, Southern Spain is a small traditional farm where I go to buy fresh vegetables. While I was waiting in the yard I looked at this rustic store shed and thought it would make an interesting subject for a painting. The old door with flaking paint, donkey harnesses hanging off the wall and the usual farmyard junk would be fun to draw. I wanted to include Manuel, the farmer, to add life to the composition so, when he returned from the fields with my broad beans, spring onions and lettuce, I asked him if he would pose on his chair in front of the shed. There is a colony of pale ginger cats on the farm so I decided to include one of these too.
